The Evolution of a Cult tends to be characterized by clear stages.

1. The Big Idea

An inspiring figure or figureheads present a revolutionary approach pledging a cure for disconnected individuals.

And so it goes. Preparations are underway to confront the system down in Brisbane. Tensions are rising. Conflict emerges from the sidelines. A lone figure, exposed, anxious, the words HIGH RELEASE POINT displayed prominently in chicken blood, has emerged into view and is being led away under a blanket for a temporary assignment in county cricket.

Do you ever miss the start, when the world was still young? The initial phase, of pure instinct.

2. Initial Adoration

Movement founders promise a reboot, hope for a future, love, success together who all believe in the big idea.

What was this thing back then? Players celebrating enjoying success. Ink. Forearms. Focus. Peak performance vibes. Of course, England’s players insist they don’t use the label, ironically as it’s denied, what was that spectacle?

However, everyone understands its essence. It’s the batsman attempting a move so unconventional it has to be pixelated. It’s the adrenaline of Ben Stokes at his peak, a demeanor suggesting: thoughtful warrior, strong features, hair woven from beaver hide, truly contemporary you half-expect to notice and find him positioned in the field shirtless holding a fish.

It’s the batsman still being allowed speaking publicly, resembling a joyful figure formally attired, uttering phrases such as we’re breaking down traditions. And yes, the energy, for quite a long time, was uplifting.

3. Expansion Period

Development stage. Unity enforced by rote learning of key phrases. These principles may seem irrational as a loyalty check.

Am I alone? The backlash, the fury, the disappointment post-defeat feels overblown, unwarranted. England batted badly during the match, as they often do in Australia. They were dominated in the field during a brief period as the bowling and captaincy fell apart, manipulated by the opponent imitating their style effectively, responsive to the situation, a man playing with brilliance.

Currently, we see the criticism, the frustration, the view of the sport as a kind of abomination. The feeling seems to be that losing isn’t enough, they need to lose righteously, to be cleansed, flame-throwered, overwhelmed by the vengeful purity of the pace attack, the simple basics of the veteran, marking successes modestly similar to getting a pleasant gift. What impact will this have?

4. The Backlash Phase

Issues emerge due to setbacks. But the cult cannot admit errors. It starts to feed on anger towards critics.

The fact remains, half a week out the upcoming game, we have now reached an intriguing moment in the story of this approach. England could quite easily win overseas in a blur of adrenal disruption. Probably, defeat could come swiftly. And if they do lose it feels like we may see the decline.

Before that happens, a couple of points worth saying about this. More than two years ago, at the start, of optimism and energy, I wrote an article calling it a phenomenon. People were very angry, which was helpful because everyone knows the best way of proving something definitely isn’t a cult is should followers send hundreds of furiously one-eyed messages rejecting criticism of its truths.

Recent events in the last few days are equally notable. Criticism of the approach is now the trend. We have a uniformly angry internet, critical analysts, pictures of upset followers overseas cheated out of three days of cricket, reminiscent of timeshare owners seeking justice.

On the other hand, there is the broader context of the opponent’s mixed deep-seated frustration at these weirdly passive-aggressive buccaneers, claiming, hey, that thing you love and have developed to distinguish yourselves culturally from us, it’s just a joke ultimately.

Here lies the truth. It’s all cults. The style was a trend since the sport itself is insular. In fact, English cricket has always been a cult, a clique, a garden party, a closed world with centuries of tradition and mystery supporting it. This has always been where influence is guarded. It’s the imperial sport of the British, the original sports washers. And guess what, the nation has its own culture, a structure of hidden ranks, a royal family remains.

The team have been sealed up in this environment since childhood. In trying to escape from it, to create a less brutal environment, they are mirroring their own experience, building another enclosure, a limited community, but now with a new team and a mentor who wants you to be yourself provided you conform.

Live where your feet are. Run towards the danger. But no matter how fast and far you run, you remain stuck.
