Guitar Hero Turns 20 – How a Plastic Axe Connected Generations Between Music Generations

It has been two decades since Guitar Hero first launched in North America, giving everyday gamers the means to feel like rock legends. Not in reality, but try convincing someone who's nailed the epic lengthy guitar solo before an enthusiastic crowd of friends.

Created by Harmonix, the game provided users with a guitar-shaped controller to follow coloured notes moving along the display in time with the music. Each riff mimicked particular chords, creating the feel of an authentic live show.

Harmonix had already experimented with rhythm games before partnering with the publisher, later acquired by the gaming giant in 2006. Together, they established the groundwork for a surprising billion-dollar series which made a remarkable influence for many musicians included, showcasing decades-old bands to millions of younger players.

Michael Dornbrook, former COO from the developer, remembers the initial financial challenges in securing the recordings – even though initial releases primarily featured cover versions.

“We rerecorded every song since the dollar figure prohibitive,” he explains. “Even with the publishing rights by themselves, it proved extremely difficult. We couldn’t get bands like legendary groups – RedOctane was operating on a shoestring budget, and our team was pretty convinced it would fail. However, when Guitar Hero took off, album purchases airtime increased, all artists desired to participate.”

He continues: “One of the amazing things was how many parents reached out expressing gratitude for exposing their children to the music they adored. It became a multigenerational thing.”

Classic Rock Gains Younger Fans

Irish blues-rock band the Answer included their track in the 2008 release Guitar Hero World Tour. Guitarist Paul Mahon remembers the way the game brought classic rock to the forefront: “The game offered a bigger, new demographic. Generally this had been considered music that was past it, but then when it was featured on the game and teenagers discovered it, abruptly it became trendy. That legitimised the genre, eliminating the outdated tag. It gave our catalog renewed popularity.”

At that time, the Answer’s first record remained not available in the US, meaning the game was a key medium of discovery for the band as they went on a North American tour opening for AC/DC. “The roadies had on Never Too Late on the tour bus, and several recognized us thanks to the game,” Mahon says.

Rock’s Heavyweight Spin-offs and Lasting Influence

Music's heavyweight names quickly took advantage of the game's success, with Aerosmith, Metallica and others starring in specialized spin-off titles that focused on each band’s catalogue and associated stories, visuals and legendary status. For example, the Aerosmith edition, it was said to have made the group greater revenue compared to their records. It sold more than half a million copies upon release, and sales of Aerosmith’s music rose significantly during an era when the music business faced decline.

Guitar Hero continues to inspire nimble-fingered fanaticism within the community. Recently, an online personality achieved an impressive attempt of DragonForce’s Through the Fire and Flames – an infamously tough anthem popularized through Guitar Hero – using a fan-made version, a no-cost alternative with almost identical gameplay but an array of personalization features. The song is challenging enough on the hardest setting, not to mention played at double speed while hitting a single one of the thousands of cues. They claimed requiring nine months of practice.

“Guitar Hero offers a, imaginary experience. If you play other games, it doesn't imply you should pick up a real gun and enlist,” notes DragonForce guitarist the artist.

DragonForce had already completed a profitable run when Through the Fire and Flames was featured on Guitar Hero III, yet he explains it made them widely recognized. “I remember our distributors calling to tell me that we were records were moving rapidly,” he says. “Popularity surged when we next toured, and we were playing right ahead of the headliners on the Mayhem festival.”

Indeed, DragonForce’s exposure via the game proved so vast that it risked eclipsing all other the band has done. Last year, the track featured in a trailer for a major film. “In the past I felt differently, but now I accept it,” he admits. “If you only listen to a single track, that's fine – each person has a unique path in music and I'm pleased we played a role of people’s lives”.

The Lasting Impact from the Plastic Guitar

Top-tier promotion, whether it’s for automobiles, apparel or video games, goes further mere transactions – it evokes a desire. Was the game able to tap into that? “That’s exactly what we were trying to create,” Dornbrook says. “The excitement of performing as a music icon in the spotlight. From day one, the creators felt that humans have a natural urge to create songs, and they wanted to leverage innovation to allow people to do it”.

The majority installments came out over a mere half-decade from 2005 to 2010, featuring derivative titles such as the DJ version, including a spinning deck, and the band-focused game. Subsequently, corporate focus on peripherals waned, aside from a brief comeback several years later.

Games such as the fan project and Fortnite Festival have maintained the community active, and there’s expectations of a new product from the founders on the way. Recently formed developers has entered work on its debut music game. The initial creators are both involved as special advisers. Is the world prepared to welcome a new entry in the spirit of Guitar Hero?

“Our team believed those games might become like Madden where you can releases,” Dornbrook says. “There’s so much new music it could remain evergreen, so I’ve always been hopeful. There’s no reason why it can’t continue for future fans.”
